Amazon’s Boeing 767 cargo plane crashes during landing at Miami International Airport. Five fatalities confirmed. Flights suspended.
A Boeing 767 cargo plane belonging to Amazon veered off the runway during landing at Miami International Airport, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. Black smoke billowed from the aircraft as it came to rest on its side on a road adjacent to the runway.
Airport officials confirmed the aircraft departed from the crosswind runway and became immobilized at the northwest end of the airport. Initial footage circulating on social media depicted the large cargo jet lying on its side in the middle of a road, with black smoke emanating from its still intact fuselage.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the plane, which had departed from San Juan, Puerto Rico, slid off the runway shortly before landing in Miami. The FAA stated that five people lost their lives in the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
Following the crash, all flights at the airport were suspended until 4:30 PM local time. All runways and taxiways were closed to traffic. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy advised passengers using Miami International Airport to anticipate potential delays and cancellations.
